Here fishy, fishy… Learn the basics of reeling ’em in

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and the Mesilla Valley Flyfishers will co-sponsor a kids fishing clinic from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 9.

Topics will include casting, fly tying, fishing rules and regulations, hooks and knots, and identifying fish and insects.

“It gives them other things to do besides watching TV and playing video games,” said New Mexico Game and Fish Warden Ray Aaltonen of the annual event.

Bring fishing gear, sunscreen and a jacket to the Alumni Pond at New Mexico State University, located West of the Pan American Center. Those without fishing gear may borrow some at the clinic.

Lunch will be served at noon. And there will be free prizes and snacks for kids.

The event is open to all children and their parents. Participation from kids with little or no fishing experience is encouraged. The program is free to children age 11 and under. Children age 12 or older must have a New Mexico fishing license. An adult must accompany children attending the event.

Pre-registration is required at New Mexico Department of Game & Fish by calling (575) 532-2100.
